I confess. I am a beauty junkie. It’s true. I love discovering new products and testing them out. This love affair, however, can have a steep downside. It can lead to a junk drawer of half used products, a daily reminder, of the mistakes you have purchased. Not to mention, costly as well. Cut to…subscription boxes! Whaaat? Tell me more! These little boxes are perfect the answer, for any of us junkies, wanting to try out the latest and greatest beauty products without the clutter and cost of doing so. I tell you, these boxes, are brilliant! There are tons of subscription boxes out there these days. There is pretty much a subscription available, for any interest or hobby you may have. The boxes that interest me most are the beauty and tween boxes.
So what is a subscription box? Once you find your interest, simply sign up, fill out a profile and pay. Then, either monthly or quarterly you will start receiving “boxes” in your mail, based on your personal profile. Easy. Who doesn’t love getting a fun present in the mail each month? I know we do!
We currently subscribe to Boodlebox (a tween subscription), Julep Maven (a nail polish/beauty subscription) and Birchbox. Click here for more info on what Birchbox has to say about their monthly box.
Let’s talk Birchbox. When Birchbox first launched, I tried them out. I was lukewarm. I kept my subscription for about a year. We had an up and down relationship. One day, with a heavy heart, I decided we should break up. Recently, Birchbox got back on my radar. I was starting to read how other bloggers were loving their monthly Birchbox. Birchbox love was all over Instagram. Feeling left out, I decided to re-activate my account. I logged in, re-did my profile to better suit my current needs and paid $10 to my old friend. Let me tell you, I am so happy I reconnected with my old buddy, as the August Box did not disappoint. Let the fun begin!
First, let’s pause and take in the cute packaging?
These are the 5 products that I received in my box. Cost to me was $10 for 5 deluxe, guilt-free samples. These products are based on my personal profile, boxes can slightly differ.
LAQA & Co.
Sheer Lip Lube Pencil in Menatour (Purple), full size $18
I really love the feel and smell of this Lip Color. They call it a lip pencil, to me it is a lip color with the ease of a pencil. It glides on super smooth. This is a semi-sheer lip color that is perfect for when you want some color, without the heaviness of a lipstick. Perfect for when you want a little more than a lip balm. Having an olive complexion, I feel like I always need a little color to make me look and feel awake and perky! Bonus…it smells minty and feels light. I tried it on its own, as well as layered over my lipstick and loved it! I thought I loved the color until BOTH my kids asked me why my lips were bright purple! This Lip Pencil is available in a 2 pack for $16 so I am going to order the LAQA & Co. Lil’ Lip Duo in ‘Bossy Boots and Ring of Fire’ and see if my love of this lip product can grow deeper.
Next up in my box, makeup remover
Dizzolv’It Makeup Melt Cleansing Balm, Full Size $24-$36
I have a love hate relationship with my mascara. It is an absolute essential in my makeup routine, yet I hate trying to get it all off. I can’t stand the feel of residual mascara on my lashes in the evening, it itches and is annoying. I have tried every product out there, from drug-store to high end and have yet to find a mascara remover I really love. This sample, by Cailyn, made making up with Birchbox worth every penny! I LOVE this product. It is an Antioxidant cleanser that not only removes my mascara, but, is said to dissolve waterproof makeup, dirt and oil while hydrating the skin. What I can tell you is that, my mascara literally melts off, along with the rest of my makeup. My dry skin, doesn’t feel dry after I rinse off. This one is a winner and on the UPS truck with my new Lip Pencil!
Body Radiance Lotion, Full Size $24
This is a yummy smelling body lotion that uses olive oil and avocado to naturally hydrate and firm skin. It smells like verbena and I love it! I wish the scent lasted longer because it smells so yummy! After about an hour, I don’t notice the smell any more. I wish I could smell it all day, it is that good. I have been using it sparingly because I want it to last. It is a light moisturizer, in my opinion. That said, I have very dry skin and am used to a heavier cream. It is a little pricey for me for a body moisturizer. It is on my wish list (hint, kids!).
PORE MEDIC Pore Minish Primer, Full Size $32
I love using a primer under my foundation. I think it smooths the skin and helps to keep your makeup on longer. I feel it is the canvas for your makeup. I have tried lots of primers over time and find that any primer is better than no primer, especially if you are going to be taking photos. This primer claims to refine pores while prepping for make up. Well, that’s a bonus! This product goes on your face before putting on makeup, after moisturizing. What did I think? I like it. It is weightless, no silicone feel like many other primers, no weird smell and I didn’t even notice it was on, ALL DAY. I am not sure what it did to my pores, but I will say, the days I had it on, I got compliments on my skin. I also don’t have very big pores, so maybe that is why I did not notice a difference. Thumbs up on this one if you are looking for a lightweight-no feel primer. I personally will stick with my primer from Hourglass for now, but, this is a nice option.
Color Assure Pre-wash Primer, Shampoo & Conditioner, Full-size, $11.99-$17.99
This trio was the last item in my box. It is a oil-infused trio that says it will keep my color vibrant, without sulfates. I have been loyal to my PUREOLOGY products for a long time now. I am always up for trying new products and have never tried a Pre-Wash Primer, hmmmm. I was intrigued, as this product costs much less than the products that I am currently using for washing and conditioning my hair. I tried it out and can’t say if it is fantastic. The sample only allowed me one shampoo and I would need to try this for a few weeks to determine if it was better than what I am already using. That said, it had a nice smell, felt really “clean” and left my hair feeling pretty much the same as if I had used my regular shampoo and conditioner. Price is good, so I may try it down the road.
So that is the dish on this month’s box! I thought it was pretty awesome! Be sure to check back for reviews on the upcoming September Birchbox! Do you have a favorite subscription box? Do tell, I’d love to hear! Thanks for stopping by!
I have never trled a subscription box but after reading this I just might. I get anxious when looking at these products at stores, especially when there is a salesperson involved and the prices are so high but to be able to try samples at home is my speed.
Good point about the hovering salesperson, been there! So difficult to make a solid decision under pressure. I don’t like feeling that I have to get something just because sales person was telling me I needed to have it, so stressful. I’ll admit, sometimes I will make the purchase just to get away from the situation, eek! Shopping should be fun…for $10, I never need to leave my home or feel pressured. The September box is headed my way via UPS so stay tuned! Let’s see if my excitement continues! Thanks for stopping by!
