Ever stood in front of a full closet thinking, “I have nothing to wear”? You’re not alone—most of us have been there. Digitizing my wardrobe completely changed how I get dressed, plan outfits, and shop. It’s like carrying my closet in my pocket—and hands down one of the best style moves I’ve ever made.

What Does “Digitizing Your Wardrobe” Even Mean?

You can:

  • Browse your pieces without digging through hangers
  • Mix and match outfits visually—kind of like playing with paper dolls.
  • Track what you actually wear (and what you don’t)
  • Edit without getting emotional
  • My favorite feature? You can easily record what you wear each day and upload a selfie to track what you actually wear—genius!

It’s exactly what it sounds like — creating a digital version of your closet. You photograph (or screenshot) your clothes, shoes, and accessories; the INDYX app beautifully removes the background and stores them in the app, in digital folders.

A quick disclaimer: I’m not affiliated with INDYX, nor am I paid to share their app. I’m a paying subscriber, and everything I share here comes from my own experience using it.

Why INDYX Was a Game Changer for Me

Once I saw everything laid out in one place, I realized how much overlap I had — and what was missing. It made outfit planning so much easier and helped me shop more intentionally.

I started noticing:

  • My most-worn pieces vs. impulse buys
  • Duplicate items in my closet
  • How very few new items – if any – were actually needed to pull everything together
  • Cost per wear.
  • Which colors and silhouettes I naturally gravitate toward
  • What pieces I actually wear day to day…
My INDYX most worn pieces Sept,October

Looking at my most-worn pieces from September to November, patterns emerge: 4 wide-leg jeans, the same 10 gold jewelry pieces, a large Longchamp le Pilage tote, and the Energy XL crossbody nylon bags, black tanks and Vuori joggers, one black skirt, a black blazer, 1 mule, 2 sneakers, 3 sandals, and a camel coat. Could this be my capsule wardrobe?

How I Digitized My Closet

You don’t need fancy software — just a little time and decent lighting.

Here’s what I did:

  • Over a month, I snapped clear photos of a few items each day and added them to the INDYX app. The INDYX background remover made the process surprisingly quick and easy.
  • Added tags like color, category, and season.
  • Began playing around, creating outfits, and saved my favorites.
  • Used the calendar feature to log my daily outfits and selfies

Tip: Start with your current season’s wardrobe — it’s less overwhelming!

What an Outfit Diary Looks Like

Here’s a peek at my Outfit Diary from September and October.

Though it may look time-consuming, creating a flat lay only takes seconds. The real time sink is uploading items to your digital closet – though totally worth it. This is the fun part.

Once you add a flat lay to your calendar, you can also upload a selfie. You can take it anywhere—the app automatically cleans it up and removes the background.

My INDYX Outfit Diary | October 2025

From October 3rd–15th, I traveled to four cities—from sunny San Diego to chilly Delaware—carrying only a carry-on and never once running short on outfits. In fact, three t-shirts and one shirt could have easily stayed home. I planned everything in the INDYX app, and it made packing effortless.

Though I missed documenting a few days, you can still see how many outfits I created using just a handful of pieces and accessories. You may also notice that a few of the selfies don’t match the flat lays, that’s due to me wearing one outfit in the AM, another in the PM, and not logging it correctly – I am still learning!

How It Changed My Shopping Habits

  • When I’m tempted by something new, I add it to a “Wish List” category in the app and test it out digitally. I check if it duplicates something I already own—and if not, I style it with pieces from my virtual closet to see if it truly earns a spot. This little step has saved me countless shopping dollars (and return trips!). My rule: if it doesn’t work with at least 5 things I already own, it’s a no.
  • The paid (and very affordable) version of the app includes a fun feature that lets you share your virtual closet with other members of the INDYX community. You can ask them to style outfits from your wardrobe or offer outfit advice—a great way to connect with others who love fashion as much as you do.
  • Cataloging your wardrobe helps you see not only the pieces you love and wear often, but also the shopping mistakes along the way. And if you’re a closet geek like me, it’s a fun way to analyze your style and spot patterns in what you actually wear.

My Two Cents

Digitizing your wardrobe may sound extra, but it’s a surprisingly simple way to save time, money, and closet space. Once you start, you’ll wonder how you ever dressed without it!
