No spaghetti straps, knee length, conservative, something you can dance and sit properly in. With this directive directly from the Cotillion manual, my daughter and I set out on a mission to find her a dress. A dress that not only she liked and felt comfortable in, but one that the instructor and I would approve of as well. A fun party dress that did not make her look or feel like a 6 year old.
We headed out to our go-to store, Nordstrom. The darling sales gal in the girls department knew exactly what we were looking for and was very familiar with Cotillion dresses. Apparently quite a few people had been coming into the store looking for these style dresses for their own girls over the past few weeks.
Between the three of us, we pulled together some great options from both the girls department and the Brass Plum junior department.
Here’s a look at what we tried on and a few additional options that I found online:
For links to all the items above, click HERE to link to my Polyvore set. Once there, clicking on the items within the set will take you directly to the source. I noticed that when you click on the items within Polyvore, they say the dresses are sold out. This is not the case, just link directly through to Nordstrom.com and there are still sizes available in all styles. I added that 2 went on sale so there is an update in the list above as well.
The following dresses were available in our local Nordstrom store for trying on:
I thought these were some great dress options for us to try on. Note that the 2 options on the right by Soprano from the junior department run very slim to the body. Junior sizing differs from the girls department. My daughter is usually a size 14 in the girls department and the small dress was the best fit for her. The extra small was too tight. We found this interesting as she wears XS in juniors tops. The 2 dresses on the right are by Soprano. Soprano also makes girls dresses. We find this brand to be a great crossover brand for tweens. The Frenchi dress on the left was not a good fit for her, it was too big on the top. If your tween needs more room on the top portion of the dress you may want to give this a try. For my daughter it was just to large overall. I liked the elastic waistband and the choice of solids and prints. It would be cute with a sprakly belt.
In the end, my daughter selected this dress, we both loved it!

Whether you’re looking for a party, holiday, church or Cotillion dress I think Nordstrom has some great options to choose from. Mom and daughter approved! There are many styles online that are not in the store if you strike out while shopping in the store.
We did find these cute Sam Edelman gold sparkle shoes over in the girl department that go up to size 5. Unfortunately my daughter has a high arch and these did not work for her. The Sam Edelman ballet flats look just like mom’s with a little more sparkle!
When I got home, I went online and found a much wider selection of great ballet flats. Here are a few I liked that had great reviews.
Sam Edelman ‘Fiona’ glitter ballerina flat | up to size 5 | $49.95 | HERE
Kenneth Cole Reaction ‘Lil Bit of Buck’ flat | up to size 6 | $44.95 | HERE
Ruby & Bloom ‘Josie” ballet flat | up to size 5 | $44.95 | HERE

Dress/shoe/anything involving clothing shopping for tweens can be a challenge. My daughter and I always have a fun time, but not without a little work on both our parts. After a successful shopping mission, we always grab a yummy snack at the espresso bar as a reward for all our hard work and patience. If you and your tween don’t always see eye-to-eye, I suggest grabbing a salesperson who can help mediate the process. A good salesperson can understand Mom’s needs as well as your tween by listening and knowing the products available. It is helpful to have a neutral party giving opinions to avoid any arguments which will for sure make the process no fun for either of you. Remember, she is trying to express herself and feel comfortable and beautiful all at the same time. Take a deep breath and let some control go, I promise it will be more fun for both of you!
