What will you wear when the weather turns cold? We’ve had a few chilly mornings, but let’s face it, you can still get away with throwing a denim jacket over your favorite sundress and not freeze your butt off. But not for long.
Before you shop, I’d like to suggest you take a moment to assess your closet. Not in the mood for assessments? Then, by all means, scroll down to the bottom of today’s post to check out and shop 5 pieces that will update and elevate your look right now.
Before You Shop | The ASB 3 Step Seasonal Wardrobe Assessment
1. Tune-up Your Closet Space
After you Overhaul Your Wardrobe (view my how-to guide | HERE), conduct a wardrobe scan. Visualize a tuned-up closet made up of great fitting garments, in colors and silhouettes that flatter your body type – all working together with ease. Understanding what is IN the closet is worth any time invested, before you begin to shop for a new season.
2. Scan Your Wardrobe | What Do You Own?
Scan of your basic knit layering pieces, jackets, sweaters, leggings, jeans, cold weather shoes, and boots, etc. and ask yourself the following 5 questions:
- Are your favorites up for another season, or have they had a “full life”? (pilling, fading, holes, stretched out)
- Does it fit and is it flattering to my body today?
- Is the item outdated?
- If I was shopping TODAY, would I buy this piece?
- Did I wear this piece even once last year?
If you answered “no” to any of these 5 questions, consider letting the piece go.
3. Make a list of what needs replacing
Is it time for a new pair of jeans? A few new tops? A beautiful cashmere sweater? New boots? With your list on-hand or in your phone, THEN get out and have some fun rounding out your wardrobe and maybe adding a few new pieces to elevate what you already have. 5 Pieces That Will Update Your Wardrobe Right Now
Now that you know what’s IN your closet, here’s a list of 5 items that could easily be added in with what you already own, to elevate your look this season.
1. Something Snakeskin
Adding a blouse, belt, sweater, shoe, or bag in SNAKESKIN will instantly elevate your look! And if snakeskin isn’t your thing, I’m loving zebra and tiger stripes right now.
Darling right? Available at Nordstrom, shop her EXACT shoe | HERE. The Steve Madden ‘Feather’ Loafer is available in 10 colors, but why wouldn’t you want pink snakeskin?? $69.95-$71.95 | HERE.

2. A Statement Coat | Topcoats and Chore Jackets
A TOPCOAT in Camel, Navy, Blush or Grey is easy to find and is available at every price right now. OR go bold with a coat in a pop of color, plaid, animal or floral print.
If you’d like to pull off this look, but live in a warmer climate, consider a “Coatigan” (shown below). Usually UNLINED, a coatigan offers the styling of a coat, in the weight of a sweater cardigan. For those of you who love your long cardigans, this is a fabulous update to your wardrobe. If a long coat overwhelms your frame, a CHORE COAT (shown in denim below), plaid or corduroy is a fun new piece

4. Cargo Pant, Paper Bag or Jogger Pant
Zara has some of the best joggers and cargo pants right now. While shopping there this week, I noticed women left and right picking up THIS pair of cargo pants. For a fun option in camo print, check out THESE . Shop all Zara Cargo Pants (HERE).
And if you are looking for a pant that can take you from day to night, I can’t wait to style up THIS pair of vegan leather joggers from Rebecca Minkoff.
5. A “2 Piece Suit” in plaid, jacquard or black
Yes, it’s a bit 1990’s, but I would love to find a 2 piece black tuxedo suit. If plaid is your jam right now, there are many options for “plaid suiting”. Worn together or as seperates, the suit is something that can really stretch your wardrobe this season. I’m still on the lookout, so if you’ve found one, drop me a line down below, I’d love to know where to look!
