Like the trench, a camel coat is one of those timeless pieces that just works—classic, effortless, and instantly elevates any outfit. If you’re over 50 (or really, any age), the key to styling it is finding that perfect balance between chic and comfortable.
I grabbed my coat back in 2019 after getting pulled into the idea that the camel top coat was a “must-have for every capsule wardrobe”. At the time, I wasn’t looking to splurge, so I picked up a budget-friendly one from Uniqlo for around $70. Turns out, it was a fantastic buy—despite my attempts to upgrade to a higher quality piece, this 6-year-old – unlined for CA – coat remains my go-to for three seasons of the year.
If camel is not your favorite color, you can recreate any of these five outfit formulas with a topper coat in grey, winter white, black, brown, or even a menswear pattern. Here are five ways I love to style my camel coat—let me know which one’s your favorite!
1. Classic & Chic
This is my go-to “pulled together without trying too hard” look. Pair a camel coat with a black bottom, an off white or white top, and mules, classic loafers, ballet flats or ankle boots. Add a structured handbag and minimal jewelry, and you’re set for anything from brunch to a casual work meeting.
2. Casual & Effortless
For those days when you just want to keep it simple but stylish, throw your camel coat over a soft cashmere sweater – or white tee in the warmer months – your favorite jeans, and comfy sneakers, trainers, or Chelsea boots. Perfect for coffee runs or a relaxed weekend out.
3. Elegant & Feminine
If you love a touch of elegance, try draping your coat over a midi dress, LBD, or, like here, a black silk slip skirt, knit tunic top, knee-high boots, and animal print crossbody bag for added interest.
Neutral tones keep it classic, but if you’re feeling bold, jewel tones can add a sophisticated pop of color.
4. Monochrome & Modern
For that effortlessly cool, fashion-editor vibe, go for an all-neutral look—think beige or cream-colored pants with a matching sweater under your camel coat. And though I LOVE it on others, I don’t wear winter white head to toe – so I recreated the idea here using all grey. Dressing head-to-toe monochrome is a simple and modern style secret that always looks expensive.
5. Denim & Black Layers
When the temperature drops, layering is key. A turtleneck or long-sleeved knit top, (barrel) jeans, and booties will keep you warm while still looking polished. Colder temps? I would add a black – or plaid – scarf, bucket hat, and gloves.
No matter how you style it, a camel coat is an investment piece that never goes out of style.

I love my camel coat! Thanks for the styling ideas.
About 6 years ago I bought a vintage 100% full length camel hair coat with gorgeous satin lining all in great condition. It was $60. I had it dry cleaned, altered – sleeves lengthened, shoulder pads removed, etc.
It is the warmest coat I own and I wear it with jeans and just about anything else.
Sounds like you found your perfect match! I love a good vintage piece – and when you alter and customize it – you will have it for life! Lucky you! Thanks for stopping by! xx
