I love fall! A fresh start, a new school year. It’s a new season full of color and great fashion! But, for many of us, with tweens, shopping back to school can be a frustrating experience. Our girls are outgrowing many of the styles and sizes in the girls department. The juniors department, though full of great fashion, can be a bit more edgy than us Moms are comfortable with. Your tween may no longer fit in the kids shoe department, yet, is not ready for the fast fashion and heel heights of the juniors shoe department. Oh, and lets not forget the sticker shock that goes along with our girls feet growing out of the kids shoe departments. Oh my!
Out back to school shopping with my own tween, she and I scoured some of our favorite tween retailers and came up with some darling age-appropriate options. The styles are out there, you just need to know where to look. Nordstrom, for example, offers many items up to size 16 in their Tween Scene department, online. Many of the styles online can be found in the Nordstrom girls department as well. The Nordstrom juniors department offers sizes as small as 0 and XS. Junior sizing can be tricky for tweens. If your tween has had a growth spurt, you may be Ok in this department. What we found while trying on a few items from the Brass Plum Department was that the tops that appeared to be crossovers for tweens, arm holes were on the large side, necklines low cut and length of the tops tend to be longer. Some fit, but, lots don’t . You need to have her try a few on for herself. They may work. I also love Johnnie B, a division of Boden USA. Johnnie B offers sizes up to size 16+. Old Navy does a nice job as well, offering up to size XXL/size 16 on their size chart. Another great place to shop is Target. Here, they offer many girls labels up to size 16. Target Online offers a ‘shop by size option’. I like that! Justice sizing goes up to size 20 in some of their basics. For shoes, I think TOMS, Converse, Vans and Nike do a great job offering fun styles for tweens that are available in grown up sizes. Johnnie B and Target have some great tween shoe options as well. Dresses. Dresses are tough as many of the styles are to mature for younger tweens. For today, I put together some really fun dresses that are comfortable for school, play AND Mom approved. Because I love shoes, I added some that my tween and I discovered, while we were out shopping for back to school. These items are all available currently in stores or online. OK, let’s talk TOMS! I love them, my tween loves them! So comfy, great for school and beyond. TOMS is a great company with a cause, what else can I say? If you are not familiar with TOMS, they are a company that matches every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One.® . You can watch their video here. for more info on their philosophy. To get the correct fit, I do recommend trying TOMS on in the store or buying 2 sizes and returning one. Nordstrom offers free shipping and returns which makes it easy to get the sizing right. I have found in the past, each style fits a little different. These are the perfect shoes for girls who have grown out of kids shoes. I like that the prices are still reasonable for tweens. There is a price jump when you move into women’s sizing, but it is not as painful as some brands.
