Smart casual is one of those terms that gets tossed around a lot, but what does it really mean—especially for women over 40? Think of it as the sweet spot between polished and relaxed. It’s not corporate, and it’s not loungewear. It’s about looking put-together without feeling overdressed—perfect for grabbing lunch with girlfriends, hopping on a flight to visit your college kids, chasing grandchildren at the park, or even heading out for date night.

At this stage of life, many of us are in transition. Our closets may still hold pieces from our corporate years or stay-at-home mom years, but our day-to-day style needs have shifted. The good news? We don’t need a whole new wardrobe. Instead, it’s about blending timeless pieces we’ve owned for years with thoughtful, current-season additions. Here’s how to start:

1. Start with a Closet Clean Out

Before mixing old with new, do an honest closet edit.

  • Donate or sell what no longer suits your style, lifestyle, or body.
  • Let go of “someday” items—if you wouldn’t add it to your closet today, it doesn’t belong there.
  • Keep quality classics like well-tailored blazers, a crisp white shirt, denim you love, and simple dresses. These never truly go out of style.

2. Organize What You Keep

Once you’ve streamlined, organize your wardrobe by category (pants, skirts, tops, blazers, dresses) and then by color. This makes it much easier to see what you own and what might be missing.

New Tool: INDYX app

I recently cataloged my entire wardrobe using Indyx—a free virtual closet app—and it was eye-opening. While cataloging, I instantly knew which items I didn’t want to bother adding. That clarity made donating and selling so much easier.

A screenshot of my September Outfit Calendar in the Indyx app. Each look comes from pieces I’ve uploaded to my virtual closet and shows exactly what I wore that day. At the end of the day, I snapped a selfie—whether I loved the outfit or not—and added it to the calendar for future reference.

I’ve always found outfit selfies super helpful—they let me see an outfit clearly, without any emotional attachment, and keep a diary of looks I actually love. The app makes it easy: it removes backgrounds, links the selfie to your outfit calendar in one step, and even lets you jot down notes about your look of the day.

3. Play With What You Own

One of the best parts of using Indyx is the ability to:

  • Create endless outfit combinations
  • Log your daily outfits (with selfies attached)
  • Gain a better understanding of what you “really wear” – as well as what you don’t
  • Build packing lists and wishlists

4. Slowly Add Curated Seasonal Updates

I’ll admit it—at age 58, I have a lot of clothes, and sometimes I feel a little guilty about it! That’s why when I add something new, I make sure it complements my classics rather than competes with them. Unless I’m replacing a basic, I want each new piece to feel fresh and different from what’s already in my closet. Think about:

  • Updated denim silhouettes (wide-leg, straight, or cropped) that you don’t already have covered.
  • Modern sneakers or loafers for casual polish – maybe in a fun color, metallic, or a print.
  • A statement blazer. Still classic but in an updated color or cut
  • Versatile knitwear that layers well. I have gotten really picky in this area and look for quality cashmere or high-quality natural fibers so I don’t overheat. No more bulky or itchy knits for this girl!
  • A fresh handbag can instantly modernize older outfits. This is another area where I shop for quality and something unique – yet practical.

I wanted a denim-on-denim look that felt like me. I started with my go-to Pilcro wide-leg jeans, black tank, and belt—my trusty uniform. Then I layered on my oversized Citizens denim shirt and longtime windowpane topper coat. The orange Longchamp tote (newish) adds a fun pop of color, and the chunky Boden loafers (new) really lift the look—mixing old favorites with new for a fresh, elevated vibe.

5. Mix Old and New for Smart Casual Looks

Here are a few ways to style your go-to favorite classic pieces with seasonal updates:

  • Pair a classic white button-down with new wide-leg denim and chunky loafers.
  • Layer a tailored blazer you’ve owned for years over a new ribbed knit top and straight-leg trousers.
  • Style your go-to black dress with this season’s denim jacket and sneakers for a polished casual vibe.
  • Combine a cashmere sweater from your closet with this season’s statement belt and modern flats.

I adore this vintage Valentino top, but I rarely wear it. Pairing it with my favorite jeans, gold jewelry, and sandals felt effortless—and low-risk—since most of the outfit was made up of tried-and-true favorites I already love.

The beauty of smart casual style is that it’s flexible, timeless, and personal. By curating what you already own and layering in modern updates, you’ll always feel fresh without starting from scratch. And, if you’ve never tried a virtual closet tool like Indyx, I highly recommend it. Having your wardrobe at your fingertips makes it so much easier to style, edit, and shop with intention.

What’s one classic piece in your wardrobe that you keep reaching for, year after year? Use that piece as your starting point, building outfits from there. Build different combinations around that piece, take some selfies, and see what you come up with. Styling takes practice, and there is no time like the present to begin!

  1. Thanks, Suzanne. This is right up my ally, and I’ve started taking selfies. I’m going to check out the INDYX app and get moving. My closet is purged and I needed quite a few pieces. Am gradually adding classic styles that compliment what I already own.

  2. Hey Rebecca! The purging is the hard work – congratulations on completing this important task! I find selfies to be an important piece of workable information, along the path of learning about and gaining insight into our own personal style. To be honest, I used to feel kinda uncomfortable about taking a photo of myself in front of a mirror, but once I shifted my mindset from “taking a photo” to this being a “working photo”, I got over myself. I usually crop the photo off at the shoulders, as this allows me to just look at the outfit, not messy hair or a poorly lit photo to be critical of. For those of us who love organization, INDYX is a great tool that not only provides a digital closet (helpful when creating outfits, packing, wishlisting or shopping for something new) at your fingertips – the creativity options are endless. Try the free version for a month and see what you think! xx
