Welcome to Legging Week on AskSuzanneBell.com! Just in time for the nesting season, I’ve rounded up my top 5 legging picks for your comfy casual looks. I’m sharing a few styling tips and my musings on why each of these 5 leggings serve a different, yet very important purpose in my winter wardrobe. THEN, I hope you stop back THIS COMING Friday, when with the help of a few of my blogger sisters, we’ll be styling up VEGAN LEATHER LEGGINGS and a variety of looks to get you ready for the Thanksgiving Holiday week. But wait, there’s more! NEXT Tuesday, I’ll be sharing MORE everyday legging looks, created from the 5 pairs in today’s post, to leave you inspired to create a few of your own, for just about any occasion.
Leggings are the easiest, yet most tricky article of clothing to pull off with style, and once you come to terms with a few guidelines – it’s a love fest!
#1 Butt and crotch remain covered at all times.
#2 Know that black is the most flattering color.
#3 Invest in a pair that is not see thru.
#4 Tunic, tunic, tunic is the key to coverage
#5 Skinny on bottom = full on top, balance is key!
What I look for in a legging:
Leggings must stay up, and a wide waistband does the trick. And if it has a control top, even better. I have personally tried, worn and tested each of the following 5 leggings over the years (along with a few others that didn’t make the cut) and today you’ll get to know my top picks.
Do I have favorites?
Absolutely! You’ll find them linked at the bottom of this post.
Today’s post contains affiliate links for your convenience. As always, all opinions and selections are my own.
#1 Wide Waistband Legging
If you are looking for a thinner, inexpensive option, the Hue wide waist band legging is the bomb! Not to be confused with other leggings by Hue – which I have mixed emotions about, the magic is in the high/wide waistband. Perfect for everyday around the house or layered with a dress. These keep their shape without bagging out at the knees.
#2 Lysse Control Top Legging
Flattering and comfortable, these are my go-to “dressier” leggings. A built-in shaper makes these feel tighter, in a good way. I suggest beginning with your regular size. I thought I needed to size up, but once I was in them, these babies weren’t going anywhere. To get them on, I suggest folding the waistband down, skim the legging over the hip and then roll it back up. The vegan leather pair are a challenge to get on – but once on the body, feel like second skin. But if tight is not your thing, perhaps size up.
#3 Lysse Faux Leather Legging
Actual waist band, close up.
#4 Zella High Waist ‘Live-in’ Slim Legging
Perfect for beyond yoga, these leggings are more matte than your average workout pant, do amazing in the wash, and hold it all in, all while staying up. My daughter and I can’t live without these!
#5 Ruby Ribbon Leggings
The 5″ tummy panel not only keeps these leggings up, it also smooths out the tummy (without discomfort). Available in ponte, ottoman ponte, suedette (love) and now faux leather, these leggings are available in a wide size range of XS-XXXL. I personally own both the Suedette (HERE) and Ottoman Ponte (HERE) styles and am very pleased with the wear and fit. New to this season, I am loving the Vegan Leggings (HERE) as well as, are you ready?, the Studio 54 Legging (HERE and on my wish list!!). Ruby Ribbon leggings run TTS in my opinion.
