Where do you shop for fun tops? Probably the most requested “where do I shop for?” item on AskSuzanneBell.com – we’re talking everyday pieces that work back to our favorite jeans and bottoms; tops that layer well under jackets and sweaters. Over the past few weeks, I got out of my office and paid a visit to a few of my favorite stores, along with a stop by a few retailers not always covered here on AskSuzanneBell.com, to see what’s available right now. Today’s round-up covers everything from classic white shirts, tunics and knits, to bodysuits and lace camisoles from Anthropologie, Nordstrom, Talbots, Zara, J Crew.
Let’s take a look, then I’d love to know what you think. Have you tried any of these pieces on for size? Where do you shop for everyday tops?
Nordstrom
I actually was in Nordstrom for a bra fitting. Do you regularly get fitted for a bra? If not, consider a visit to Nordstrom and get fitted! Did you know most of us are wearing the incorrect bra size? Aside from being way more comfortable, the right bra can change how you look in clothing – and even make garment fit better! And yes, I was wearing the wrong size, so I’m happy I popped in! After wrapping up in lingerie, I had an extra hour before kid pick-up, so I headed over to the women’s area to check out some tops. I lucked out with a wonderful salesperson, who listened, and brought in as many tops as I had selected – I love that!
ASB STYLIST TIP: DO carry a list of what’s missing in your closet on your phone. This little step will keep you focused on what you really NEED – and steer you away from buying more of the same thing. In order to create outfits, we need a variety of pieces that work together, creating a WORKABLE WARDROBE. Consider scanning your closet BEFORE you shop, and make a list of what you need, to wear MORE of what you have.
ON MY LIST:
- A v-neck tunic to layer under jackets and long cardigans
- A scoop or v-neck neck knit top or three to layer under jackets and cardigans (crew necks make my shoulder look even more narrow than they are)
- A top or two to wear with high waisted jeans and skirts
- A new T-shirt bra!
I tried on quite a bit and will be sharing more of my dressing room selfies in upcoming posts, but for now, here’s a look at a few items that would work well on their own or layered under this seasons cardigans and jackets.

BROWSE MY NORDSTROM PICKS
Anthropologie
One of my favorite pieces to layer under this seasons menswear and chunky sweaters is a feminine camisole – and Anthropologie is the place to find CAMIS that don’t look like they just happened out of your lingerie drawer. I couldn’t resist THIS green velvet cami – picked up with my Birthday discount. There are a few others on my wish list…doing the SALE DANCE!
I also thought they had a great selection of basic tees from Sundry and Michael Stars. I just bought the purple ribbed tee by Sundry (featured under my stripe duster cardigan), but it’s not yet available online to link. (HERE) is what appears to be the same tee in a different color. I like it because it’s long enough to 1/2 tuck, has a flattering not-too-low scoop neck and the perfect cap sleeve. My store had 4 colors available, including the popular on-trend gold that is everywhere right now.
Zara
For trend pieces at a price, check out Zara. I spotted THIS tunic on one of my favorite bloggers a few weeks ago and tracked it down over at Zara.com. Work here with skinny jeans and a plaid jacket, I could see this top layered under just about anything from jackets to sweaters. The lace trim adds feminine elegance to anything you choose to pair this top with. This past week I got a lot of “where did you find that?”, so here you go!

Talbots
Targeted to the Modern Classic Woman, I had the opportunity to attend a fall fashion show where my Mom was one of the models – never say you are too old, Mom is a proud 75! Talbots currently stocks a fabulous pull on jean (jegging) | HERE, along with some wonderful sweaters, knits and of course their infamous basic white shirt (HERE). Go short over long and layer her under your favorite sweater, collar up, tails out – for a elegant lean classic look. Also available in a longer length (HERE).

J Crew
Known for their basic button downs, I find J Crew to have one of the best selections of basic tees. And whether you choose their tried and true basics or the new Mercantile line – J Crew has the everyday white tee covered. Last month I picked up (THIS) Body Suit, knowing at some point I would wear it with jeans. Bodysuits pair beautifully with this seasons high-waist denim and skirts. I found JCrew to have one of the best selections of body suits that FIT, right now.

Thank you so much for this post! I’m going to try a few of these out! Your mom looks great in her talbots jacket!
Thank you Amy! I can’t tell you how many women ask me where all the everyday tops are. Pieces that aren’t too tricky or trendy, but are elevated from the everyday tee. It was time for a round-up! xx Suzanne
I love that lace top! And Both your mothers s and your jacket! Great styling!
Thank you Nancy! Isn’t it different? I think it will be super fun layered under sweaters once we get through this Indian summer we are experiencing. I love moms jacket. She is petite and it fit her perfectly! xx Suzanne
Great selection of tops! I love the first wrap top!
And how fabulous for your mom!
It was really fun to see mom in the show. She did great! Isn’t that wrap top the best? They only had navy in the store so I bought it, but online there are so many moe colors. I would love it in grey as well! xx
