Plaid for fall is as common as red for the holidays – but this season’s plaids have a bit of 70’s twist making them feel fresh and new. So if you are looking to elevate your look this season, consider adding something in plaid; perhaps in the form of a high waist pant (Love THESE), jumpsuit (Darling and priced right, HERE) or a tweed jacket (Like This) to jazz up your wardrobe.
Today’s Stylish Monday post includes tips on how to easily pull together an outfit using plaid, style tips on pattern mixing + beautiful outfit ideas from 10 international style bloggers. Let’s get you styling like a pro…welcome to Stylish Monday!
Plaid Style Tip #1:
As with any print, take a good look at the undertones of the pattern, then style your outfit around those colors. For example, a close up look at my Trina Turk blazer (below) shows colors of blue, black, orange, mustard, gold and burgundy red tones. A recent thrift find, I’ve already styled this blazer with black, denim and orange. I think it would look fabulous with burgundy.
Plaid Style Tip #2:
Did you know the lining of your jacket tells a story? A designer will often choses a lining that cordinates with the plaid of the piece. Allow the lining to inspire you to create interesting outfits that stem beyond the usual black, grey, navy, white base colors. I’m sure Trina Turk designed a blouse that is similer to the lining you see below, that coordinates beautifully with this particular jacket.
Plaid Style Tip #3:
Don’t be afraid to mix your patterns. Plaid works beautiful back to animal print, snakeskin print, polka dots, stripes and more. Look at the undertones of both patterned pieces and make sure they are “friendly” together. You’ll see some creative pattern mixing in today’s Stylish Monday Post as you scroll down. This outfit works as the white and black colors of my snakeskin mules are picked up in the blazer and blouse. The black bag and sunnies keep the look “grounded” and pulled together.

Plaid Boyfriend Blazer
An 80’s throwback, this wardrobe wonder is being styled by women in new ways that look fresh and new. Consider replacing your everyday cardigan or denim jacket with a blazer, and let the compliments roll in.
Plaid Pants
A black sweater pairs up with just about anything, but isn’t the plaid so fun? I like to pair my crop pants with mules – it seems like such a natural pairing.
Plaid Dress
Head to toe plaid is a bit much for my taste, so I like to break up the print with a third piece in a solid color. A natural pairing with this dress would be black, but I tried pairing it with camel, and I like how the outfit turned out. Try playing around with unexpected pieces in your closet – you never know what new combinations you may come up with. Dress, Nordstrom | SIMILAR (HERE)

And I don’t have any plaid shirts! 🙂 I love the plaids that are out right now as they work back to so many of this seasons prints and bold colors. And the vintage pieces are wonderful worked back to denim and back for a retro vibe. Thanks for linking up! Suzanne
