For many of us, our go-to fall uniform, will look something like this:
button down shirt, quilted vest, skinny jean, bootie or tall boot – done.
Why?
It’s simple, looks pulled together, and takes us wherever we need to be – on busy days.
Having a bad hair day? Add a flannel baseball cap.
Love some bling? Add a Michael Kors oversized watch, and some layered bracelets.
Temps are cold? Add a cozy infinity scarf, wrap or cape, fingerless gloves and tall knee high socks.
Rainy? Pop on a pair of Hunter Wellies and a Mac.
Here I am last fall, walking the neighborhoods of NYC, in a J Crew popover (the 2015 shirt update, is plaid), Banana Republic quilted vest (note this vest is thinner than a puffer – that is a different look), skinny jeans, tall boots and longer hair.
A look, previously dominated by J Crew and Madewell, can now be found from Burberry to Target, and everywhere in between.
While shopping at Old Navy and Target, for long pants and hoodies for my son, I was able to try on some fab J Crew knock-offs, along with a few other pieces. Old Navy is running big promos this weekend, so prices could be less than posted here.
Old Navy
Plaid linen blend tunic, now $28.00 HERE
Big selection of plaid button down shirts, and no collar popovers in cotton, linen/cotton and flannel. Personally, am liking the longer style shirts right now.
I found the arms to be tight on this shirt. I am consistently a small in Old Navy tops, but I sized up to a medium, for a more tunic fit, and to be able to move my arms.
Black and white windowpane shirt, $29.94 HERE
There are a ton of plaid shirt options, which I did not have time to try on – but can be found online HERE
Quilted vest, now $30.00. Also in black HERE
The Old Navy version is pretty simple with a zipper, no snaps or details.
Old Navy dressing room lighting is HORRIBLE!
Actual color is as the photo above , on this green vest. I am wearing a size small.
Target
Merona plaid shirts, $24.99
Good selection of plaids and checks in both flannel and washed cotton.
As you can see, these shirts run SMALL! I could barely get the size small over my head. I sized up to a medium, which fit like a small. If I wanted an oversize fit, I would even go up to a large. These are a thinner flannel and poplin, but for $24.99, that’s what you get.
Merona quilted vest, $34.99
I love it paired with the check blouse. More colors available.
Reminds me of the J Crew quilted vest, from last year:
Pretty darn close, right?
If in between sizes, or you plan to layer, I would size up. I am wearing a small in this photo, but the medium was more comfortable.
I found great vests and plaid shirts at Banana Republic, Gap, J Crew, Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack – you get this idea.
Find the vest that works for you + a flattering plaid shirt, off you go!
While at Old Navy, I came across a few more fun pieces.
Old Navy Plaid Poncho, in 4 plaids, now $35.00 HERE
Old Navy sweater dress.
Just say no to this one!
I love the style, but it’s so itchy I could not even try it on for you.
Old Navy Cowl Neck Poncho, on sale $39.00 HERE
This is cuter in real life, and on someone with broader shoulders.
It is Old Navy usual quality (one season wear), but what I liked was the color – reminded me of a Vince sweater I own from a few years back. Cute with a long sleeve layer tee and skinny jeans – not the wide legs I have on.
The color online, is more true to the real color. In this photo the color is washed out.
Short sleeve long cocoon cardigan, now $48.00 HERE also in black
Again, Old Navy quality, but I like the color (better in real life), and styling on this one. Wear belted or not.
Rounded hem layering tank, now $12.00 HERE
I liked the length and fit of this top for layering. Feels like a rayon/cotton blend. I bought 2 and will not be putting them in the dryer.
Target booties:
For me, I like the pointed toe on the ‘Eagen’ and ‘Isa’ bootie above. But if you prefer a round toe, the details on the ‘Melody’ bootie below are spot on-trend.
Adam Lippes for Target, big check sweater vest, $39.90
For more on Adam Lippes, click HERE
This is a size small. I ordered an XS, as I felt there was a little too much material on the small. So I would say it runs on the roomy size. Available in regular and plus sizes. For under $40.00, I think it looks and feels more expensive than it is. It has really fun sherpa pockets, that you cannot really see in the photo. I plan to wear it open or with a black skinny belt, paired with a black midi-knit dress for work and black skinny jeans for play.
Once it cools off around here, I’ll be styling this piece up with booties and boot to share with you all!
