When I first began blogging on style, I was quite uncomfortable with the idea of taking a photo of myself in an outfit – it just was a strange concept for me. In fact, I was so uncomfortable, that I would only post Outfit Shots from the head down. But as time marched on I became more comfortable, and I began sharing my style with other style lovers and bloggers in a wonderfully accepting community on Instagram. As I began to pull ideas from bloggers I followed, I began to share my style – to provide inspiration to others seeking direction on how to pull it all together. I still am uncomfortable having my photo taken in certain situations, but I believe it’s a necessity, if you hope to guide and direct others to finding their own personal style.
Always Have Your iPhone Handy
Though the days of taking a quick selfie from the neck down in the bathroom mirror have passed, I do still take mirror selfies in my closet – to give myself guidance. Furthermore, I always have my iPhone available when shopping in stores. A photo is honest, with little emotion attached. It won’t lie. You may fall in love with a piece for many reasons; price, color, styling, you saw it on your favorite Instagrammer and had to have it – but maybe the fit is not your best. This is when a quick snap of the camera can come in handy. When planning outfits for the week, a special occasion or trip, I always try the piece on, then snap photos using different shoes and accessories -until I get it right. Sometimes I’ll take it a step further by placing the different looks into a collage using the PicStitch App on my iPhone, allowing me to objectively evaluate each look. If I can’t find say the right handbag for the jumpsuit I want to wear Friday night, I will make a note on the photo of what accessory would “make the outfit”. Then, when I am shopping, I have a quick reference as to what piece is needed to complete my look. Having the look with me right there on my phone saves lots of time and multiple trips to a store.
A Day in my Closet
Once I’m happy with an outfit, I delete it out of my camera, but I was able to find a few past closet shots in the archives to share, perhaps you will find this system helpful as well. I believe this system of shopping my closet saves time, money and frustration in the long run – and who wouldn’t want more time?

I do find it amazing how I can look in the mirror and everything looks fine. Yet when I snap a photo—there is a difference!! Although I have learned that sometimes the differences is personal preference and not right/wrong!!
Great examples, Suzanne!

I totally agree Jodie that there is no right or wrong…we each should wear whatever we feel our best selves in…sometimeS we just need that second unbiased Opinion. Thanks for dropping a line!

I think you have such a valid point, suzanne. iphone photos force us to examine (and judge) a garment purely on its merits (or lack thereof) whereas professional shots can make just about anything look couture. while i no longer want to use them for my blog and instagram (as much as possible), i need to get over my personal hang-ups about seeing myself through the lens of my iphone 🙂 so thank you, for this very much needed kick in the ass XOXO
p/s i would love to see that knit dress with the striped cuffs and hem worn as a mini dress with a hip belt!!!
Thank you Sheela for your great feedback! I too have for the most part stopped using mirror selfies, but they sure come in handy in dressing rooms or when I’m styling a pIece. Often we see these gorgeous looks on ig, yet some of those looks may have taken over 10 tries to get there!
I love your suggestion on the hip belt…thats why i love this fabulous blogger community!

Often it is better to take some photos see what looks best. Somehow photos work better than a mirror. Thanks for linking up to Top of the World Style.
I COULDNT AGREE MORE. PHOTOS FOR ME ARE MORE OBJECTIVE. I’VE SURPRISED MYSELF A FEW TIMES! XX
