Feeling Blah About Your Closet? You are not Alone. The in-between seasons — like April and May — are when I feel the most uninspired. Honestly, it’s hard to get dressed when the weather hasn’t made up its mind. Some days it’s freezing, some days it’s blazing hot, and the mornings and evenings are still chilly. It feels bipolar.

Our weather here at home has been cooler than most spring seasons, so much so, I haven’t even unpacked my warm-weather clothes yet. It’s not boot season anymore, but it’s also not sandal season yet. And frankly, I find the whole thing a little unsettling.

So, what to do about it?

When I hit this “blah” spot every year, I return to my core pieces — button-down shirts, layer tanks, jeans, and my favorite black blazer. These are the items that ground me.  And over time, I’ve learned a few more tricks that help me (and could help you too) get through these confusing months.

8 Easy Tips to Feel Good Getting Dressed

Layers!

Think lightweight cardigans, denim jackets, a classic trench coat, or a simple utility jacket. You want pieces you can throw on in the morning and peel off by midday. Lightweight scarves are also a game changer — they add a little style and give you just enough extra warmth when needed. I like to tie one to my handbag handle for a little extra color and warmth when I need it.

Rethink your footwear

It’s not boot season, but it’s not sandal season either. Make sure your loafers, sneakers, ballet flats, and ankle boots are accessible. A pair of colorful socks can add extra warmth and a fun zing to your overall look! I like to keep a pair of no-show socks in my handbag, in the event I need a little extra warmth.

Bring your transitional fabrics front & center

Heavy knits are too much, but flimsy summer clothes aren’t quite right yet either. I stick to lightweight cashmere, denim, cotton knits, poplin, chambray, and linen blends. These fabrics breathe, but still give you enough coverage when the weather flips halfway through the day.

Switch up your denim wash

Light wash or white denim feels fresh and springy but still substantial enough for the chilly mornings.

Add a pop of color

Start introducing softer neutrals, pastels, or brighter accent colors. Something as small as a colorful scarf, a fresh lipstick, or a bright bag can shift your mood — and make your outfit feel more “spring” without freezing to death.

Accessorize

Hats, structured bags, fun sunglasses — these are easy ways to make your basics feel a little more exciting. You don’t have to buy a whole new wardrobe. Sometimes, just switching out your accessories makes old pieces feel new again.

Be an outfit repeater

This is a short season, find a few uniform combinations you feel great in and just rotate them. I keep my black blazer, utility jacket, and oversized button-down shirts front and center to layer over knit tank tops and lightweight jeans or skirts.

Be kind to yourself

This time of year is tricky — it’s not your fault! Just ride it out, stick to the pieces you know and love, and before you know it, true warm weather will be here (along with a fresh burst of inspiration).

The in-between season may feel tricky, but you can make it work with a few versatile pieces and smart layering. Stick to your go-to items, embrace the weather’s mood swings, and remember: it’s okay to keep things simple, sunny days and summer outfits will be here before you know it!

  1. I like these ideas. I keep a neutral cardigan ready to go year round. Sometimes I use it as a scarf !
