Head over heels I almost went, as I headed out the door in a maxi dress a few weeks ago. The darn thing had stretched out while hanging in my closet, and in flat sandals, was now skimming the floor. Just enough, for me to step right into the front of the dress and get myself all caught up in it.
No time to change, I grabbed a hair tie out of my handbag and knotted up the side of my dress.
This quick action was in part influenced by having recently reading a post by Ann Kremb, who had performed a similar quick DIY alteration to a jumpsuit she had recently purchased, HERE.
Hair ties have saved the day for me on many a bad hair day – but today they saved me from having to run back and grab a pair of wedge sandals or worse – perform a quick outfit change before heading out the door.
Viola!
Bonus: I love these sandals, and now you can see them – with the dress up and knotted!
I’ve always worn this dress at it’s full length,
it’s nice to have another option – for more casual days!
I have used a hair tie here, to adjust the waist on this midi dress – making it a more flattering length, to wear with flat sandals.
Tight around the calves, by raising it up a few inches – I could pick up the pace when walking – I was much more comfortable!
I shortened this maxi from Joie,
to a more suitable length to my flat sandals – for a day with the kids at the pool.
As far as what hair ties, I just use the cheap pack from Target by Goody, for tying knots in my clothes. There is however a hair tie, I never leave the house without.
My daughter is hooked on these as well. Never too tight, and they don’t pull -LOVE!

Having an issue, keeping that off the shoulder top in place?
Judee, an AskSuzanneBell reader, recently sent me a great link, showing how to use hair ties, to keep your off the shoulder tops in place.

Brilliant!
We all thank you Judee!
Pants falling down?
Hollywood Hip Hugger is another favorite of mine, for holding up the pants, HERE
as is the BELT AWAY.
As we all know, clothing is not a one size fits most. Items mostly don’t fit right off the hanger, and some adjustment is usually required.
Anyone else have some DIY tricks and tips, for getting your clothing to fit just a little bit better?
I also use belts for many different adjustments, how about you?
Have a fabulous weekend!
XOXO
Suzanne
A quick note: “Blogs I Read” has been added back onto Ask Suzanne Bell. This is a list of blogs I personally follow, not all, but regulars. This page automatically updates – whenever the author posts something new. Therefore the most current post lands at the top. My hope is that this new format makes it easy, so you don’t have to hunt around for your favorites. While you are here visiting, you can simply pop on over and see what’s new out in the world of blogging. Not all are fashion or style blogs, you may just find one you love!

How clever, Suzanne, both you and Anne 🙂 being on the shorter side of petite, i know i’ll find this exceedingly useful.
p/s i really love how the knotted sides give your maxis an edgier vibe!!
Hi Sheela! Coming from you, saying the maxi is a little more edgier – I think I might just take hair ties to all of them, LOL! I agree, it is a great tip for petites, who want to wear maxis as well! XOXO
Hey Suz!
Love the tie but not having long hair, I don’t quite get how to do it. My knots don’t look like yours! can you talk me through it?
Hey Trish! I will show you how to do it when I see you! xx
What a fun idea! Especially good if you are tripping on the dress like I wind up doing with some of my maxis.
bisous
Suzanne
Hi Suzanne! Yes, this works great – especially if you want to keep your maxis long to wear with all your fabulous shoes! xx
