As much as I love summer, when the leaves start to fall, or here in California my allergies start to act up from the dry high temperatures, I get a itching for fall to kick in.
Ready to get things moving along, last Friday I switched out my closet; meaning summer in storage till next spring, fall winter clothes down. I took everything out of my closet, packed up summer, then went through all of my pieces from last winter. Next, 3 piles. One for donation, another one for re-sell and the last pile for items in need of repair/drycleaning. My mind is clearer, now that this big step has taken place. I feel ready to move forward, without the dread of cleaning out my closet weighing on me each day, when I go to get dressed.

Here, we have cooler mornings and evenings, coupled with dry, high temperatures in the afternoon. Indian Summer. So how do you transition your look, without suffering from heat exhaustion mid-day?
Layers!
My fall uniform consists of denim, a lightweight top, cardigan/poncho/lightweight jacket, and transitional shoes – in fall colors. I also update my makeup colors.
A look at a typical day, here in Northern California.
Mom and I in lightweight layers, heading up to brunch at the Valencia Hotel, Santana Row.
The poncho was a must for the morning chill,
but by 1pm, I had stripped down to my silk blouse and jeans.
I have a thing for Bohemian tops, making ponchos a necessity. Big sleeves and cardigans don’t mix well.
Since it’s too hot for booties and boots, and sandals scream summer,
fall is the time for my lace-up booties.
A statement necklace, helps to balance out the heaviness of the poncho,
resulting in a more “Fall Look”.

Hi Suzanne,
We seem to be having the reverse problems at the moment, I’m waiting for spring to kick in so I can swap from my winter to summer wardrobe but the weather is not co-operating.
Hopping for a warmer weekend as it is our labour day long weekend and that is normally when I do the switch!
Love the layering technique and the poncho!

Hi Helen! Here’s to a warmer weekend to you. We are supposed to get some rain this weekend and cooler temps. Have a great weekend! xx
I see where you get your good looks!
Carole
Awe, thank you Carole!!
Hi Suzanne, I’m loving that cardigan!! Where did you get that? I didn’t see the link for that exact piece. And those shoes and necklace….love! Lovely outfit and so fun lunching with mom!
Hi April! The poncho in this post is from the Nordstrom Anniversary sale, but is currently sold out. Here is the original link if you want to try giving a Nordstrom store a call and seeing if there may be one hanging around in one of the stores; http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/echo-colorblock-knit-fringe-kimono/4335055?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&fashioncolor=WHITE
The shoes are Kelsi Dagger (older style), but there are loads of similar ones available at Nordstrom (search lace up bootie or lace up sandal). I personally like the ‘Cors’ lace up sandals from Jeffery Campbell at Anthropologie also at Nordstrom. The necklace, was a gift from Mom, she got it at Anthropologie as well.
Thanks for stopping by!
xx
