Today, it hit the 30’s. I realize for most of you, we Californians are a bunch of whiners and wimps when it comes to cold weather…guilty as charged. But, man that’s cold. Not freeze-your-face-off-can’t-go-outside kind of cold, but cold. And, I hear there’s more where that came from. In addition to cleaning out the gutters, and putting down the patio umbrellas (yes, it was at full mast up until today – this is California), I welcomed the opportunity to finally dig into my scarf drawer, and bring some coziness into my life. In addition to being a cold weather necessity, a fabulous scarf doubles as a pick-me-up, to the grey, denim, camel, black, navy palate, we tend to gravitate toward, in the cold winter months.
You all loved this oversized Kate Spade plaid scarf, when I posted it on Instagram earlier this week. Thinking I was sharing my new camel sweater coat, you all went crazy over the scarf! Oversized is an understatement, this is the longest scarf in my closet. At 84″long, I could mummify myself if it need be. For me, a scarf must be soft and cozy, no exceptions. And, I will not wear anything that sheds – mohair sticking to my lipstick or eyelashes when I’m already cold, uncomfortable and slightly irritated from having to be bundled up in such a fashion – is a non-starter.
A scarf like this, speaks for itself – it is the outfit. In order to give it the space it needs to shine, I keep things simple with the rest of the outfit, by selecting colors that are friendly, to the colors in the scarf. When I look at this plaid scarf, I see black as the base color, making my black cashmere turtleneck dress, black tights and booties an easy pick. Tights don’t provide much warmth in the cold, so I layered a second pair of thin bootie socks over my tights.
Oversized scarves are an economical (most are on sale, and if not, will be within the next few weeks), easy way to update your neutral outfits, during cold winter months!
I find scarves everywhere from retail stores to second hand. Some of the best come from sites like Ebay, ThredUp, Poshmark and consignment/thrift stores. When you buy second-hand, you just might grab a gorgeous Misssoni, DVF, Rag and Bone, Kate Spade, or Cashmere piece – at a fraction of it’s full value. Be sure to check measurements, so you know what you are getting! For reference, mine plaid scarf here, is 84″ long, and I am 5’7″.
I rounded up a few beautiful oversized scarves for you all here.

Hi Andrea! Thank you so much! I waited and waited for this to go on sale and finally picked it up at the Nordstrom Rack! The sweater coat was bought there at the same trip, I’ve been getting plenty of use out of both pieces! Hope you had a nice weekend and stayed dry! xx
