If you’ve ever stared at your closet five minutes before a holiday event and felt that familiar panic, this post is for you. I recently carved out an hour, put on some holiday music, and filmed a little styling session right in my closet—playing with pieces I plan to wear to upcoming parties, luncheons, and festive gatherings.

I pulled out everything from my J Crew gold satin midi skirt and a bright-pink cropped cashmere sweater to plaid and animal print – my exact Jenni Kayne skirt here – midi skirts, a vintage lace top, a silver sequin blazer, vintage accessories, faux fur, and shoes ranging from blue velvet pumps to animal-print mules.

I’m personally trying to break out of the default “all black everything” holiday look—though I couldn’t resist styling a pleated black satin midi skirt and my wide-leg trousers. This year, I’m experimenting with head-to-toe winter white and quirky combos like hot pink paired with gold satin. I’m also sharing a few styling tricks—arm garters to keep your sleeves up, scarf magnets, fashion tape, clear elastics, silicone shoulder pads, and a necklace adjuster—to help your outfits look intentional and polished.

Consider this your gentle nudge to set aside 30–60 minutes, pour a cup of tea, and play in your closet. Steam your favorite pieces, mix and match boldly, and set aside complete looks so you can grab and go as events pop up. A little prep now means no last-minute outfit stress later—and a lot more fun styling along the way.

Gold satin skirt (J.Crew) + my vintage Dolce & Gabbana lace tank (worn backward for a higher neckline) make a repeat appearance in today’s Holiday Styling video—this time with a hot-pink cashmere layer and a touch of faux fur. Now the real question… what shoes will I unearth in my closet?

Hunting for Holiday Accessories in Secondhand Shops

Some of the best accessories are hiding in secondhand spots—consignment boutiques, charity shops, and thrift stores are treasure troves this time of year. When you’re thrifting, always take a peek at the special-occasion dress section. If the price is right, a dress can easily be tailored into a top and styled with your favorite bottoms. Just a little styling thought to keep in mind!
