Turns out, I needed a trip to Georgetown to feel inspired again

One of my goals for 2025 was simple: when I needed something new, I wanted to make an effort to shop in person. I’ve always felt I make better decisions when I can touch, try on, and experience things firsthand. Online shopping, with its endless scroll and quick checkouts, can be convenient, but for me, it often leads to more impulsive choices and less satisfaction in the long run.

But, like so many good intentions, this goal has proven easier said than done. The reality is, with the continued rise of online options and the shrinking inventory in stores, shopping in person has started to feel… uninspiring. Empty shelves, half-stocked floors, the same few brands on rotation — it’s hard to feel excited when the experience itself feels a little tired.

However, a recent trip to Washington, D.C. gave me a lot to think about. I spent a week wandering around Georgetown, popping into boutiques that felt colorful, alive, and thoughtfully curated. Even the window displays felt like little art installations, drawing you in with their charm. The entire neighborhood—with its manicured gardens and vibrant streets—felt like it cared about presentation, about style, about offering something worth seeing.

It made me wonder: Is the lack of inspiration I’m feeling a geographic thing rather than an industry-wide shift? Because clearly, somewhere, someone is still putting in the effort. The stores in Georgetown were full of life and creativity — something I realize has been missing from many of my shopping experiences here in the Bay Area lately.

So, where does that leave us?

Maybe the answer is a little bit of both — a changing retail landscape and a local shift in energy. But what I’m taking away from all this is that it might be time to seek out those pockets of creativity, even if it means looking a little harder. Exploring smaller shops, planning visits to neighborhoods that still celebrate style, and supporting the places that are still putting their heart into what they do.

Because inspiration is still out there — sometimes we just have to go find it.
