After sharing When Fashion Lost Its Personality, I heard from so many of you who said, “Yes—this is exactly how I feel.” You’ve stepped away from mainstream shopping. You’re sticking to basics. You’re finding joy again in small boutiques, secondhand shops, and even clothing swaps with friends who share your eclectic taste.
That feedback stuck with me—because it’s exactly how I’ve been approaching my own closet lately.
Rather than chasing something new, I’ve been asking a different question:
How can I make what I already love feel fresh again?
For me, that answer almost always starts with bottoms.
Bottoms are the foundation of nearly every outfit I wear. When they fit well and feel good, everything else falls into place so much more easily. I cannot stress this enough—alterations matter. Waist, hip, length. When those details are right, the outfit requires far less effort.
This month, I took a look at my analytics from INDYX, my virtual closet app, which tracks what I actually wear. I pulled my six most-worn bottom pieces from September 2025 through now and separated them from the rest of my closet. My goal? Start each outfit with a favorite piece—so choosing tops, jackets, and layers feels less daunting and more creative.
Starting With What Works
These are the six bottoms I reach for again and again—styled into 24 fall and winter outfits, and why they work so well for me.
1. Pilcro Wide-Leg Flare Jeans (Older Style)
My all-time favorite jeans—and proof that you don’t always need the newest version. The ultra flare adds a boho/70’s vibe and movement, and I really like the mid-rise waistband on this pair. The length is perfect for flats, but I also wear these with low-heeled booties or cowboy boots.

2. L’Agence Alicent Wide-Leg Jeans (Dark Wash)
(I also own these in a light wash, now 50% off at Nordstrom, (HERE)

These are polished, flattering, and incredibly versatile. They dress up beautifully with a blazer, blouse, and kitten heels, but also work just as well with all my knits and flat shoes, sandals or sneakers. A true workhorse jean, shop 4 new washes, including my light wash pair (HERE). Check out the “brentwood” wash, now 57% off at Nordstrom Rack (HERE).

3. Sweaty Betty Retro Tricot Wide-Leg Pants (2023)
These are one of those pieces that quietly earn their place in your closet. Comfortable, flattering, and great for travel as they can be dressed up or down—I am surprised how much I wear them.

My exact pair is from 2023, but I’ve seen them pop up on eBay and Poshmark if you search by the description above. (THIS) Sweaty Betty style is very close to mine, on sale, and is still available.

Sweaty Betty also has wide-leg and track-style pants available now at Zappos (HERE), and Nordstrom Rack (HERE) currently has a wide selection of styles and colors on sale—including great everyday track pants.
I’ve personally tried and loved THESE wide-leg pants from Marine Layer (great travel pants, now $51, was $128, in 3 colors, TTS), (THIS) pair from Varley, and (THIS) pair from SPANX—all shoppable via my LTK links below.
4. FRAME Wide-Leg Palazzo Jeans (Here)
It honestly surprises me how often I reach for these—but then again, it doesn’t. They’re incredibly comfortable, the length works with nearly every shoe I own, and they require very little thought.

They may not be my most “fashion” jeans, but they work year-round, which is exactly why I grab them again and again. FRAME continues to release this style in new washes every season, which tells me I’m not alone.

If you like the fit but want less volume, FRAME also offers a slim palazzo version. Reviews are consistently strong, so if you’re looking for a reliable jean update, this is a solid place to start.

5. Jenni Kayne Cashmere Sweater Dress (Camel)
This piece is a quiet luxury staple for me. Easy, elegant, and endlessly wearable.

If you love the look but want a more budget-friendly option, Quince now offers a Mongolian cashmere dupe in camel, plus four additional neutral colors. It’s a great alternative and one I feel good recommending, $109 (HERE)

6. Vuori Joggers (Here)
Not the most exciting piece on paper—but hands down the most worn bottom in my closet. My lifestyle calls for comfort, and these deliver while still feeling put together enough to leave the house without thinking twice. If Vuori fabric feels too thin for your climate, Varley makes a beautiful jogger I like, (HERE).

There are so many other bottoms I’d love to style this way—my TWP wide-leg camel trousers, ultra-wide Veronica Beard jeans, Nili Lotan Shon pants, and yes, my collection of animal print skirts—but I’ll save those for another post if you’re enjoying this format.
The takeaway here is simple:
Start with what you already love. When you build outfits from your most-worn, best-fitting pieces, getting dressed becomes creative again—not exhausting.
I’d love to know—do you have a piece in your closet that everything seems to revolve around? The one that makes getting dressed feel easier? Tell me about it in the comments.

Always great pieces, Suzanne. I remember us chatting about starting with bottoms. Such a valuable styling tip. Takes the doubt out of making outfits we love.
Thank you Rebecca for dropping a comment and your thoughts. I’m happy to hear that you have found that starting your day with the bottom half has been helpful. I used to start with my tops – perhaps because they tend to be a bit more fun and exciting – but it is so much easier when creating new looks to start with the bottom. Keep styling!! xx
Love this sort of post to use what you have. Also the stying photos of one pair of pants worn differently is fun and helpful. Have always enjoyed your content- thank you!
Hi Andrea and Happy New Year! I’m happy to hear that you found this style of post useful. I am working on a similar format for jackets, coats and vests – so stay tuned! Thanks for your support and for stopping by! xx
