As I rummaged through my closet this week, a curious thought crossed my mind: Why do we stash certain clothes away for special occasions and keep our fancier stuff reserved for cocktail parties or fancy dinners? It’s interesting how I’ve divided my wardrobe into “special occasion” and “everyday” wear. But what if we mixed it up a bit? Imagine wearing that beautiful silk slip dress with a pair of flat metallic sandals, or throwing on that oversized blazer over a pair of yoga pants and a tank instead of a hoodie while heading to the gym.
Clothes are meant to be worn, but we rarely wear them out because we tend to see them as one-dimensional.
Bear with me while I explain. Imagine pairing a silk slip dress with a casual jacket and sneakers. Suddenly, that cocktail dress you wore once last summer finds new life on a weekend coffee run or a casual night out. This fusion of high and low fashion creates a look that’s both stylish and practical. It’s the ultimate way to stand out while staying comfortable. Or take an oversized blazer and throw it over a workout tank and leggings as you head off to the gym. This combination effortlessly blends structure and casual, giving you a polished yet relaxed vibe that’s perfect for running errands or even a lunch date – straight from the gym – or not. The juxtaposition of structured and relaxed pieces breathes new versatility into both items. Here’s an example of how reimagining my Farm Rio shirt dress (similar, on sale) allowed me to wear it across multiple seasons and occasions. I’ve also worn this dress as a swim coverup and I think it would be fun, worn unbuttoned – as the 3rd piece – over a tank top, a pair of lightweight wide-leg jeans, and gold flat sandals for summertime. stop thinking of your clothes as one dimensional, 3 examplesRethinking Wardrobe Rules When I applied this concept to my wardrobe, I began seeing my pieces as a curated collection rather than individual garments meant for specific occasions. Now, when I look at my wardrobe, I envision pairing my blue sequin maxi skirt, which I had only worn once for a holiday party, with various items: a fitted tank and flat sandals, my favorite denim shirt tied at the waist with kitten heels, or perhaps a utility jacket and trainers. The bottom line is, you bought the piece for a reason—hopefully because you loved something about it. So, why not wear it? Clothes, after all, are just that—clothing. They are meant to be worn, not hidden away in our closets awaiting the perfect occasion. By mixing and matching pieces from different realms of our wardrobe, we not only maximize the use of our clothes but also express our individuality and creativity. So next time you’re contemplating what to wear, remember: there are no rules. Wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable, and redefine what “special occasion” dressing means to you. Look at your wardrobe with a fresh set of eyes and challenge yourself to try combinations you never thought.

  1. I am in Paris now and I see this dressy with casual all around me. Mariniére stripe is a neutral ! I like the idea of wearing what you like day or night. It does involve a new paradigm. Change , as in change up your clothes, is a way to extend your closet with what you already own. ⭐️
